The Ting Tings

I’m the first person to admit that I just didn’t get the Ting Tings when they first started hitting everyone’s radar.  I found them annoying and formulaic.  I just didn’t see anything there to pay attention to.  Well, then I heard the Calvin Harris remix of “Great DJ”.  For some reason, this remix stuck with me, and I found myself singing it randomly and jamming out the the funky bassline after the drop.  Well, this morning I woke up with it in my head again, so I decided that I needed to post up some Ting Tings and deal with the fact that I find myself liking pretty much all their stuff now.

Well, as it turns out, they were on Jimmy Fallon last night.  Check the video below.

….and here we go with some tracks to check out.  I’ve included the previously mentioned Calvin Harris remix of “Great DJ”, a Dizee Rascal cover of “That’s Not My Name”, an acoustic performance, and some other goodies.

Knightlife, Matt and Kim, Cut Copy

Friday night saw me in downtown Austin, getting liquored up starting at about 5:30 PM.  At about 7:30 PM or so, I headed over to Stubb’s to grab my ticket from the booth and wander around inside.  After about 30 min or so, I met up with sailorlegs and here crew, and shortly after that, Matt and Kim hit the stage.  I managed to record a few tracks on the Flip, but I haven’t gotten them online yet, and am not really in a hurry to (you’ll understand after watching the Cut Copy video below).

Matt and Kim were on point, and pumped the crowd up nice (Knightlife wasn’t bad on the decks, but his track selection early in the night was kinda meh).  They blew through their set in about 30 min, playing a good 7-8 songs.  Mostly highlights from their new joint, Grand.  This was the first time I’d caught them, and I didn’t have any expectations, but I would definately check them out again.

Knightlife came back on and we moved around to stage left.  He upped the pace and got the crowd going a little more this time.  About 45 min later, Cut Copy was ready and the lights went down.  The following video is their intro and “Hearts on Fire”.  Apologies for the distroted sound.  This was the first night out with the new Flip and I now realise I really need to do something baout the mic gain on it.  It’s way too sensitive.

Cut Copy was better than I thought they’d be.  They kept everyone moving, and ran through most of their greatest hits (I remember Hearts on Fire, Far Away, Nobody Lost Nobody Found, Sands of Time (they said it was the frst time they had ever played this in the US, and about 3/4 through me recording it, one of the security guys told me to shut it down), Saturday, Feel the Love. and Lights & Music (the last of the 3 song encore)).  I honestly can’t remember what else they played, but it was all good, of course.  Tey played about and hour, maybe 75 min.

I did not check out the after party with L.A.X, but I did walk down the street, have 2 beers, and go home.

The Mentalists vs Apple vs MGMT

This is really cool. The fine ladies of The Mentalists have covered MGMT’s “Kids.”  Great…another version of “Kids,” you may say, but this one is different.  It’s done with only Apps purchaased from the iTunes Appps Store, and using iPod Touches and iPhones.  I only wish I’d thought of this.  I’d have the largest collection of half assed Erasure and Depeche Mode covers performed with good ol’ UMS.

I have been digging on Sebastien Tellier’s album Sexuality for a good bit now, and I must say, while Roche isn’t my favorite song on the album, the video is awesome. I’m not sure if I take him seriously yet, but…well…just watch it.
